Back to Palo Alto Baylands

Mike had some business in Palo Alto, and stopped by the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. At this time of year, the Night Herons are nesting, but the biggest treat was the bullocks oriole. The black necked stilts also put on a show.

Not So Scaly Breasted Munia

Juvenile Nutmeg Mannikins

We had a pair of Nutmeg Mannikins (also called Scaly Breasted Munia) visiting our birdbath all winter. We were hoping for a nest but never found it. However, they've started bringing juveniles to the bath so they must have nested nearby. The fledglings don't have the full coloration of the adults, but are getting a few feathers that look like scales.
